We get asked all the time: Why do some agents double their business after they change brokerages or change teams? What happens that helps them explode? The answer traces back to a lesson we learned a long time ago, and it starts with something we didn’t want to do at all.

The exercise we thought was too cheesy. The first mastermind we ever invested in cost a fortune at the time. Part of it was building a life map, drawing out every place life had really leveled up and every place it fell apart. It felt corny, and honestly, we thought we were too cool for it. We were wrong. What the map showed was that every single massive leveling-up moment coincided with a new relationship. Every time.

Vision is caught, not taught. You can’t sit in a classroom and learn to believe something is possible. You see it, and then you know. That’s the useful side of comparison. We don’t love the version where you hold your lowlights up against somebody else’s highlight reel on Instagram, but comparison that shows you what’s achievable is a different thing entirely.

The four-minute mile is the proof. For years, people thought it couldn’t be done, and then it was. We had our own version of this at Redux with four transactions a month. We had a coach pushing our top producers toward one a week, and our honest reaction was that it might work in Indiana or somewhere with a $150,000 or $200,000 average price point, but not in a market like ours. Then we did it ourselves, and then one agent on the team did it, and then a lot of them did. That belief spread the way it always does, by someone going first.

“Vision and growth are caught way more than they are taught.”

Fast heats produce fast times. Watch any state track meet, and you’ll see the pattern: run in the faster heats, and you tend to post a personal record, run in the slower heats, and a personal best gets much harder. Being around other fast horses makes you run faster. Business works the same way. Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future, and there’s a money version of that phrase too. You are the average of the people you spend time with.

That’s the whole mechanism. When agents level up after a change, it’s because the change put them around people who moved their average. You get around people doing more, and it breaks the monotony of what you’ve been doing, because if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always gotten. The move itself isn’t magic. The room is.

One last thing worth sitting with. A mentor once put it this way: “Your life has perfectly designed itself to get you exactly where you are right now.” That one landed hard. It means every place we’re sitting at a glass ceiling is something we need to address in our own lives first, not something the market did to us.
